Quantum computing technology is advancing rapidly, with industry roadmaps anticipating fault-tolerant quantum systems by the end of this decade. In parallel, a new class of hybrid quantum–HPC applications is emerging. These applications interleave classical HPC with quantum computation, e.g., to orchestrate quantum workloads, perform simulation and optimization, mitigate errors, or post-process outputs from quantum processors. Such workflows have the potential to enable scientific advances that neither classical nor quantum computing can achieve independently.
However, several questions remain open regarding how HPC and quantum computing infrastructure should be deployed, integrated, and operated to support these applications effectively and at scale. These questions span hardware architecture, networking and interconnects, workload scheduling, middleware, programming models, data movement, observability, security, and user access. They also include choices between tightly coupled, co-located systems and more loosely coupled models in which QPU are accessed remotely through cloud or WAN.
The requirements and integration approaches for a developing quantum ecosystem such as India's may differ from those of countries where quantum systems are already being integrated with HPC facilities. In India, HPC centres developed under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) and emerging infrastructure supported by the National Quantum Mission (NQM) are evolving through semi-independent pathways. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity to develop coordinated architectures, platforms, policies and operating models suited to India's research priorities and infrastructure landscape.
The goal of this Birds-of-a-Feather (BOF) session is to examine best practices and candidate reference architectures for integrating HPC resources, including CPUs, GPUs, storage and high-speed networks, with QPU to support hybrid quantum–HPC applications at scale. The discussion will consider the complete system stack, from physical infrastructure and resource management to middleware, programming environments, workflow orchestration, and application-level requirements.
The session will feature invited perspectives from quantum, cloud, and HPC technology providers; academic and national institutions operating HPC and quantum facilities; quantum and HPC platform and middleware researchers; and scientists building or using hybrid quantum–classical applications. The BoF will identify key technical and institutional challenges, highlight opportunities for collaboration, and explore the elements of a practical integration roadmap for India. A desired outcome is an initial set of design principles and priorities that can inform future quantum–HPC testbeds, reference architectures, shared software platforms, and community initiatives.
