Banquet Talk

33rd IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing

Title: The Emerging Quantum Ecosystem in India

Speaker: Arindam Ghosh, Professor of Physics, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Date: December 19, 2026 (evening)

Abstract: Quantum technologies are considered an important domain in the growth of economy and strategic sectors in India. The governmental actions and policies are creating an ecosystem in India not only for sovereign access to quantum technologies but also enable India to evolve from a capital of Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) to a knowledge-based economy built on strong R&D infrastructure and hardware-enabled industrial manufacturing. In this talk I shall describe the evolution of quantum technology initiatives in India, leading up to the creation of the National Quantum Mission (NQM). I shall provide an overview of the initiatives and policies evolving in India, both at central and state levels, for the support of quantum ecosystem through proliferation of R&D infrastructure, talent development and support to start-up ecosystem.

Speaker Bio: Prof. Arindam Ghosh is a Professor of Physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge and has been a Visiting Research Fellow in Nanotechnology at the T J Watson Research Centre of IBM. Arindam's research interest over the past two decades lies in quantum materials and devices producing nearly two hundred publications, over twenty-five PhDs so far and multiple patents and technology transfers. Arindam has led various aspects of the Quantum Technology efforts in India, including for the National Quantum Mission where he coordinated the material and devices vision document and led the design of the undergraduate quantum education in India for over 9000 technical colleges and universities. He is currently serving as the Convenor of the IISc Quantum Technology Initiative and the Chair of the Quantum Taskforce of the Government of Karnataka.
